You might have heard Erik L's (Erik Lidén) melodic music played by tastemaking radio DJ's like Gilles Peterson and Benji B, both from BBC Radio. Erik L has worked with artists such as Frank n Dank, Kissey Asplund, Dynamite MC and Hezekiah to name a few, creating a buzz in the underground scene and on sites like 2dopeboyz and Okayplayer etc. His song Soul Symphony was ranked as one of the best beats of 2009 by Benji B of BBC Radio, who have been playing Erik's stuff frequently in his shows. On Display is mixed by Devastate, a talented Swedish DJ that released his debut album on the legendary English label BBE Records. This mix features a selection of hip hop and soul productions made by Erik L in the past few years along with some new and previously unreleased material. Lately he has been focusing on getting a new album ready with his group Favorite Flava that also consists of Stray (Mattias Axelsson) and Paul Mac Innes. Supersci was early regarded as one of Sweden's most secretive hip hop collective. Isolated from the noise and trends of the big cities they earned the respect of the fans with their jazzy and vinyl-crackling sound.

Having a hard time choosing a favorite as each remix has added a little something different here. Erik L & Stray Deep have taken things in a completely different direction from the original the most. My personal favorite is the Duktus & Roman Rauch edit though, their works keep getting better & better.

1. When/how did you 1st find out about BD?
I first heard about it on a site where you could download snippets from the album and I thought it was really interesting music!

2. What got you into production
I became interested in trying to make beats when meeting producer/mc Arka from Supersci in -97. Late -98 I made my first beat and after that I was hooked. Except for like one or two years when I almost stopped..

3. What has been your inspiration/bands you listened to in your come up?
Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Wheather Report, Pete Rock, Dj Spinna, Digable Planets, A tribe called quest, Jay Dee, Stevie Wonder, Bilal, Herbie Hancock, Stravinsky, Jaco Pastorius etc.

I love both

6. What’s the 1st thing you did when you got the email that you were picked for BD2?
Actually I don’t remember. I probably told a few people about the good news.

It will probably grow and grow since people will not satisfy with regular stuff..

8. Hardware or software? What do you use?
A combination of both. Hardware: synthesizers, reverbs, fx’s etc. Software for recording/editing.

9. How is the beat scene where you’re from?
There are a few people in Sweden doing it with feeling but the scene for this more “creative” type of beats is pretty small.

10. Aside from being selected for BD2, what has been a crowing achievement musically?
Production and keyboard work for the Favorite Flava album.

11. Where’s the future taking you?
I have alot of stuff coming out probably pretty soon. My instrumental album is close to ready plus a few other albums and EP’s.

Stray is a really musical dude from Gothenburg, Sweden. He's a producer, singer, drummer and plays a little on a few other instruments. Support real music and buy he's CD from 2007 called "Here to Stray". That's what I did when I first heard the music on his myspace site, maybe one and a half years ago and I really liked his original style, not trying hard to sound like something from the states. Beautiful harmonies similar to some of the stuff i'm doing musically, I think we both have a Nordic, melancholic kind of flavor to our stuff. So we decided to do something together, and we formed the group Favorite Flava. The album is finally coming together and I can say that musically we have something unique! I believe they are about to drop an album anytime soon. He lives in Malmö but this friday he came by and we had a pretty seriuos beer drinking session.
