Interview for the new Beat Dimensions vol 2.

Taken from: http://www.beatdimensions.net/

1. When/how did you 1st find out about BD?
I first heard about it on a site where you could download snippets from the album and I thought it was really interesting music!

2. What got you into production
I became interested in trying to make beats when meeting producer/mc Arka from Supersci in -97. Late -98 I made my first beat and after that I was hooked. Except for like one or two years when I almost stopped..

3. What has been your inspiration/bands you listened to in your come up?
Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Wheather Report, Pete Rock, Dj Spinna, Digable Planets, A tribe called quest, Jay Dee, Stevie Wonder, Bilal, Herbie Hancock, Stravinsky, Jaco Pastorius etc.

4. Fill in the blank “_________ changed my life” (what changed yours?) Artist? Song? Something else?
Jay Dilla

5. Up tempo or low tempo?
I love both

6. What’s the 1st thing you did when you got the email that you were picked for BD2?
Actually I don’t remember. I probably told a few people about the good news.

7. There seems to be much more interest in this beat scene with every passing day. How big can/will it get?
It will probably grow and grow since people will not satisfy with regular stuff..

8. Hardware or software? What do you use?
A combination of both. Hardware: synthesizers, reverbs, fx’s etc. Software for recording/editing.

9. How is the beat scene where you’re from?
There are a few people in Sweden doing it with feeling but the scene for this more “creative” type of beats is pretty small.

10. Aside from being selected for BD2, what has been a crowing achievement musically?
Production and keyboard work for the Favorite Flava album.

11. Where’s the future taking you?
I have alot of stuff coming out probably pretty soon. My instrumental album is close to ready plus a few other albums and EP’s.

My mother bought a cassette of the Michael Jackson - Bad album to me and my brother when we were kids. We played it over and over and a few years later I was going through the record collection to the older brother of my friend and found "Off The Wall" on vinyl, and that music was definately very FUNKY. This is the song Im writing about. A song by a true genius, rest in peace:

Favorite Flava consists of me and Stray. Future music from the soul with a touch of the Nordic melancholy. So far we had alot of radio plays by people like Gilles Peterson, Ennio Styles, Simon Harrison and some great feedback, check below:

Hearing it all the time while workin'.. These guys are so fucking future soul!! "So cruel" is the shit! I want more of that!!
Dj Explizit

Thx for this beautiful and dreamy littly nugget.
Diggin' the broken and stylistic feel, and love the emotional deepness.
Surely dropping some of this on friday/saterday - keep on !
Sirdancelot (Freestyle Fusion 105.3 Belgium)

"DAAAAAAAAAMN DIS IS MASSSSSSSSSIVE !!!!!! DOPE ass album guyz, seriously feeeeeeeelin' da vibe, futuristic soul @ its beeeeeest (reminiscin of SA-RA) , shhhh gonna get rinse everywheeeeeeeeere, THANK U
Full support/chartin'/club & radio playin'

"Favourite flava is smoking, these dudes are bringing some heat! I'm diggin "Stray Witchu" and "Love"
Nick Holder

"That sounds great !!!
I will definately feature in my soulsearching shows!"
Michael Ruetten (Soulsearchin')

"This is Fresh!!!! Loving tracks 1 and 2, deep and dope, like a Scandic Sa-ra, but not trying to copy them too much. Lovely synths and great production, wicked spring vibes! 8/10"

Favourite Flava’s new album Different Phase, is an album which represents all my favourite flavours in music. Edginess, cutting beats, vibrating bass and melodic vigour. Stray's writing capabilites and vocals sit hauntingly well on each track. Daring, provocative and trend setting Favourite Flava has made it on my favourite list of musical duos along with Foreign Exhange and J*davey . ‘Stray Witchu’ is fire!
Miss Diane Laidlaw

"Dope mix of glitchy downtempo beats and soulful vocals. some tracks work for me better than others, but production is pretty solid and the tracks knock. kinda reminds me of sa-ra at times... favs are "waitin" and "everyday escape" -
will definitely support..."

DJ Devastate free Download!

This Swedish producer/DJ who is releasing an album called "Movement/Silence" 2009 on BBE, yup that's right!! Soundwise its organic and raw. Hip hop with tonnes of jazz and soul and on top of that a generous amount of live instrumentation, sound examples on his myspace site. The album is mastered by Erik L & Arka for Flyphonic mastering, making shure it's bangin the right way(loud and clear). Download Devastate's new funk/fusion mix, Movement mix Chapter 1, The Bar. This first one takes you back to the 1970's. Do you like funky rhythms? I sure do and have been listening to this kind of music since a kid. Download this here!

DJ Devastate is also a member of the production team Elite Fleet Crew. This crew has worked with prominent rappers such as: Masta Ace, Prince Po, Stricklin, Medaphoar, Wildchild, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Maylay Sparks, Ed O.G., Akrobatik, Joe Scudda, Last Emperor and the list goes on..

Last but not least, DJ Devastate is featured behind the turntables laying down some crazy cuts on one track on the upcoming producer album from Erik L & Illingsworth, called "Northern Connection". This piece of vinyl is set to be released real soon.

Here to Stray!

Stray is a really musical dude from Gothenburg, Sweden. He's a producer, singer, drummer and plays a little on a few other instruments. Support real music and buy he's CD from 2007 called "Here to Stray". That's what I did when I first heard the music on his myspace site, maybe one and a half years ago and I really liked his original style, not trying hard to sound like something from the states. Beautiful harmonies similar to some of the stuff i'm doing musically, I think we both have a Nordic, melancholic kind of flavor to our stuff. So we decided to do something together, and we formed the group Favorite Flava. The album is finally coming together and I can say that musically we have something unique! Check out Stray's myspace and the Favorite Flava myspace. Oh yeah, you can also buy his music on iTunes plus he has a couple of vinyl releases out and is featured on my Loose Control EP and also on the new Cerebral Vortex & Erik L EP!

"hey stray, the material you and Erik L are composing is just outstanding. wish you all the best, pce & greetz" jay scarlett (Spacek Soundsystem/ Ampsoul Generation/ Beat Dimensions)
